Get ready for second grade. Your students are learning a lot this year, and now is the time to utilize ready-to-go resources to help them in reading, math, and other content areas. You may have extra testing this year, so it’s important not to put too much pressure on yourself to create materials from scratch. I’m here to help. These teaching resources for 2nd grade will have you prepared all year long.
Sub Binders & Plans
Pre-planning for a sub in case of an emergency can be one of the most valuable things you do as a second grade teacher. Who needs the stress when you are sick, have a rare personal day, or are out of the building for professional development?
The second grade emergency sub plan bundle includes 454 pages with five sets of sub plans and a free sub tub organization bonus. You may also consider the sub binder bundle that adds every form or informational sheet your sub could need.
Get content area specific sub plans with a year of emergency ELA sub plans or Math plans. Science and Social Studies teachers will also love their own departmentalized lesson plans, perfect if you split up content or just need some lessons in one content area.
Once you’ve got your plans together, you’ll also want to put together a sub binder with all of the information the sub will need to know about your class. With little ones, this is especially important because they can’t always communicate what they need. Having this binder will be very helpful for your sub!

Reading and Writing
I can’t believe how excited students get about secret student writing. To start, a student will be a “Secret Student” to an assigned classmate. Prompts are ready-to-go and students will reflect to you on their process as they send their recipient kind notes. This activity can be done in many ways throughout the year.
This bundle incorporates reading and writing standards all year long. Secret student activities are available for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas or winter, Valentine’s, St. Patrick’s, Easter, or the end of the year. Build community and writing skills with “secret writing” in your classroom.
Teachers often struggle with how to record and track reading. These reading logs are a perfect, fun way to track choice reading. Share these reading trackers with families right away!
It’s time to start research! Yes, in second grade your students can start exploring research topics for kids. They can study animals and habitats, winter holidays, black history, U.S. presidents, inventors and inventions, ancient civilizations, penguins, women’s history, and famous authors. Research can serve in ELA or be part of social studies and science lessons, depending on the topic!
Science & Social Studies
Along with research topics like animals and habitats and penguins, second grade students are learning about living and non-living things in science. Other important lessons include weather and the water cycle.
Social studies research is amazing with lessons on everything from women’s and black history to U.S. presidents and ancient civilizations. Don’t forget about local connections like building community through respecting differences and exploring personal differences in the classroom.
